It is a matter of... some discretion, at the present moment. I am hoping to begin some work to assist some of the more disadvantaged residents of Kirkwall.

['More disadvantaged'? That sounds like code for 'elves,' to Fern, who at first bristles at having a shem bring this to her attention--before she remembers a bit more about Herian's circumstances. Ah, right.]

You mean in the alienage? [she asks a little hesitantly. Then,] I really don't know what help I'd be but--but yes, I'd love to try to help. If that's what you need from me, I mean.

[dashing]

Primarily the alienage, but... if there were those in Darktown we could assist as well, I think that would be a worthy cause. People in both places are trapped by circumstance. I... though the elves are my priority, I do not think it would be right to disregard the people of Darktown.

I have hopes to provide some opportunities to help people feel and become gradually less restricted. Reading and writing lessons, perhaps linking them with persons in the Inquisition who may be willing to offer apprenticeships, arranging opportunities to learn some skills that can help. I... I know that elven-blooded though I am, I am still a human. I do not wish to embark on this as a human charitably informing people how they can live their lives better, but approach it as— as an opportunity to grant them more freedom and power. It cannot resolve all the ills of the world and all the disadvantage elves and those born to poverty face, but—

( But it would be a step. It would be something. She wants to do this right. )

Yes, [Fern finds herself agreeing rather quietly, not quite cutting Herian off, but everything she hears she feels too. Possibly Herian is putting into words--very eloquent, clear, educated words--thoughts and feelings that Fern has been experiencing all the duration of her time in the Inquisition.

As much as Nell is right about what she has shared of the injustices of the Circle, Herian is right about this. Fern sits up a little straighter.] I've got... some ideas, I think, that might work, [she volunteers.] Things I learned on my family's farm, just useful things to teach people. It's... I know it's not much. [Said sheepishly, bashfully.]

Please, I would be very grateful for your input, and for what experience and skills you might be able to share. Even considering what skills we might be able to seek out that would be of value... and beyond that, there— there are more than likely things that the people here would disclose to yourself more comfortably than to me.

( Aye, she spent two years travelling around Orlais trying to aid elves and granting them safer passage when they sought refuge, but she was still an oddity that they looked on with fondness and caution together - a human mage, after all. Earning trust beyond that was a lengthy process, and here in Kirkwall she had to start from the beginning again. )

I thought I might speak with Araceli about swimming lessons, for example. Small things can be life saving, potentially.

[Fern hesitates, frowning.] Maybe, [she ventures, and fidgets with the end of a long lock of hair. Despite the years she spent in Ansburg on her parents' farm, well.] I'm still Fereldan--can't hide the accent, and Kirkwallers don't seem to like that much. Doesn't seem to matter if they're elven or human or dwarf... [She trails off; that sounds an awful lot like she's turning Herian down, doesn't it?]

But--but I'm sure I can do something, definitely. I'll help.

( She is braced for being declined; perhaps it was too much to ask, too presumptuous. She hadn't quite realised how tense she was - tenser than usual, at any rate - until she relaxes very slightly. )

Presently I am just reaching out to a few people to see if they are interested - bringing a vast group of people into the alienage may serve only to alarm, so for now we will likely remain a small group, but if you do think of people to whom this might be of interest, I would be glad to hear of them. Once people are more at ease with us, bringing in more people might be possible.

[She does know someone, she realizes. Already she can feel the bottom dropping out of her stomach to make the suggestion, but out of anyone else here, out of anyone else she could possibly trust to involve in something like this--]

Do you know Finch Wicker? [comes her hesitant suggestion.] He's my-- [No. No, best not to recall that. After another pause, she adds,] He's from around Ansburg, like me. Not a mage but he's got.. he's got lots of other skills, useful skills. I think he would like to help.

[And it would be good for him, she thinks.]

Serah Wicker? We have met.

( He was locked in a closet, fleeing a giant pink bird. It was...

an experience. )

I will certainly keep him in mind. For the time being, I think better not to draw too much attention by having a great many people involved; it could make a spectacle of those we wish to help, and the Inquisition. In time, however, we can certainly recruit his assistance.
